Do you enjoy the art of debate?
Benefits of Debate
I loved debate in college. I loved arguing the opposite view that I held because it strengthened my knowledge of the subject. The thing that I always remember from debate is that name-calling and other ways of cutting down one’s opponent is the “lowest form of debate”.
Debate, when used properly, is one of the best ways to learn, teach, communicate, and have fun. Unfortunately, most have no idea how to debate properly.
Arguing the Opposing View
Interestingly, whenever I argued the opposing view, I never worried that someone might think that I held that view. In fact, I attempted to convince them that I held those views. And I never explained later… “Oh, I was just debating.”
Don’t Worry About What Others Think of You
I think one of the reasons that people cannot debate properly is that they get caught up in “making certain” that others know exactly what they really believe. They worry too much about what others think of them.
When people are confident and sure of themselves, they don’t care if the crowd might think they believe a certain way. As a result, they can debate either side of an argument and then just move on.
